Thijs Kok Additive Manufacturing (AM) has made significant progress and growth over the past years, enabling complex parts to be manufactured layer by layer, with excellent material properties. However, thes e parts may contain defects at various size and length scales which affect mechanical properties of the components. X-ray micro-computed tomography (microCT) is a non-destructive testing method which has in recent years changed from a qualitative imaging to a quantitative measurement method in various applications in materials sciences and engineering. Classical Mechanics Solution Trial Components ThatIn this project latest generation of X-ray, microCT system was used for non-destructive testing of industrial components that were additively manufactured from a various alloy. These defects would have been very difficult, or impossible to detect by other non-destructive testing methods due to the object complexity, defect size, shape and location within the component. Visualization and quantification of the pore size distributionchanges before and after the scan are accomplished by alignment of the volumes. The application of X-ray microCT to additive manufacturing is thus being demonstrated. In addition, the examples also illustrate its potential use for high-value mission critical partscomponents across the industry while challenges for implementation of microCT and defect detectionanalysis will be discussed.. View project Project Studies of Dimensional Metrology with X-ray CAT Scan Herminso Villarraga-Gmez Stuart Smith Darren O. Clark. Artem Amirkhanov X-ray computed tomography (CAT scan, or CT) has evolved from medical imaging and nondestructive evaluation to dimensional metrology. As a result, CT now contributes to the dimensional inspection an d geometric analysis of manufactured parts spanning a variety of industries. While dimensional accuracy is not crucial for medical diagnoses, accurate dimensional quantification is the essence of X-ray CT metrology. Despite advances in technology, the current state of the art of CT metrology still confronts challenges when trying to estimate measurement uncertainties, mainly due to the plethora of influencing factors contributing to the CT measurement process. To understand the variables affecting the precision and accuracy of CT dimensional measurements, this project presents a series of experimental studies that evaluate the performance of CT measurements, and their uncertainty budgets, in comparison with CMM reference measurements. For dimensions of geometric features ranging from 0.5 mm to 65 mm, a comparison between CT and CMM measurements, performed at optimized conditions, typically resulted in differences of approximately 5 m or less for measuring lengths and around 5 to 50 m for measurements of form. Methods for estimating measurement uncertainty of CT scanning are also assessed. A comprehensive study of metrics used for proficiency testing, including rigorous tests of statistical consistency (null-hypothesis testing) performed with Monte Carlo simulation, is also included. This latter study shows that the use of the En-metric could be difficult to interpret when applied to evaluate performance andor statistical consistency of CT measurement sets..
